very nice writing desk. Possibly walnut. Lined with an 1868 Philadelphia Enquirer Newspaper. The box belonged to Jesse Cox. Jesse Cox Sr. (1811-1885) was a liquor dealer in Philadelphia. His son, Jesse Cox (1843-1902) was a Philadelphia lawyer.  More than likely it was the desk of Jesse Jr. Measures 11 x 8 3.5 when closed. Measure 11 x 15.5 x 3.5 when opened, Two velvet lined compartments inside. Velvet all there, dusty looking. Three cubbies are in the front. No key Brass hinges. The desk slants when opened tfor writing.  A nice little piece of history
